Can I get financial aid during the summer semester?

Students attending Summer term may receive a financial aid award if the following criteria are met:

  • You must have completed the FAFSA and have an Institutional Student Information Report (ISIR) or Student Aid Report (SAR) on file with the Financial Aid Office.
  • You must be fully admitted to a TCC degree seeking program of study.
  • You must meet TCC’s Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid.

Actual enrollment status will be determined at the end of the drop/add periods for the session you are enrolled. This will be one factor used in calculating the actual award amount you are eligible for. The estimated award may be revised if the final enrollment status is different from the initial enrollment status used to calculate your award.

If you were awarded Federal Pell Grant prior to the start of the main Summer term, then your Pell Grant eligibility will be determined by the credit hours enrolled at the end of the Summer Main drop/add period.

Federal Pell Grant

Federal Pell Grants are available for Summer term even if you have previously used the initial amount for which you were eligible. The U.S. Department of Education has authorized institutions to award up to 150% of the Federal Pell Grant for which a student qualifies in an award year. Most students will need to enroll in at least six eligible hours to qualify for the additional funds. A limited number of students, who did not fully utilize their Federal Pell Grant in the Fall and/or Spring terms, may qualify for a less than half-time Federal Pell Grant. Students who have reached their Federal Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility Usage cannot receive further Federal Pell Grant funds.

Summer Loans

Promissory Note and Disbursement
When a Federal Direct Student Loan is for one semester only (e.g., fall only, spring only, summer only), the federal government requires the College to make the loan in two payments, with one occurring after the mid-point of the semester. Students who receive a one semester loan should make appropriate plans.

Enrollment Status
To receive any loans a student must be enrolled for at least 6 eligible credit hours as a degree seeking student and meet the financial aid satisfactory progress requirements.

Students who attend multiple sessions within a semester cannot receive their loans until they are attending at least 6 eligible credit hours. Students may be enrolled in 6 or more credit hours, but the loans cannot be paid until the student has verified attendance in 6 credit hours.

Bright Futures

Florida Bright Futures Academic Scholars and Florida Bright Futures Medallion Scholars eligible for Fall and Spring awards may receive a Summer award if all of the following criteria are met:

· You must be a degree-seeking student

· You must be accepted into your program of study

· You must enroll in a minimum of 6 eligible credit hours of courses required to complete your TCC degree program

Funding is limited to 45 credit hours within an academic year.

The $300 college related expense for Academic Scholars is NOT available for Summer.

Summer funding is not available for Florida Bright Futures Gold Seal Vocational or Florida Bright Futures Gold Seal Cape Scholars.
