The Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, prohibits the release of information from a student's file to third parties without written consent of the student. Students who want the Admissions and Records Office, Advising Center and/or Financial Aid Office to talk with any third party, including parents or a spouse, must grant third party access in the "Friends and Family" section of their Workday student account.
Once the student grants access this gives the staff permission to speak to the people identified. There are distinct areas that students can grant access to and each area covers particular offices; the Financial Aid FERPA which covers all financial aid and student financial information and the Admissions/Advising FERPA which covers all admissions and records and advising information concerning the student.
Once a student grants third party access, the parent/legal guardian or spouse, they will receive a user name and password and will be able to access the information that the student has granted permission for them to see in their student's Workday account. Additionally, staff in these departments will be able to discuss information over the phone or in person at the front counters of Admission and Records, Advising and Financial Aid.
Any part of these releases can be revoked by the student, at any time, by logging into their Workday account and removing the access that they previously submitted.
